Why did some of my embryos stop growing?

Not every fertilized egg grows into a blastocyst. This can happen even when you followed every instruction.

What you should know

Embryo growth depends on many parts of early cell development. Chromosome problems are one possible cause, but an embryo that stops growing is not given a certain cause by appearance alone. Ask your lab for a day-by-day summary and what it may mean for another cycle.

What to ask your care team

“How many embryos reached each stage, and what can we learn from this cycle?”

One important reminder

Do not blame yourself for an embryo that stopped growing.

Before your next visit

Write down your questions. Bring your medicine list and any test results you have. Ask for a plan in writing. If an answer is not clear, ask your team to explain it in a different way.
