What happens during egg retrieval?

A clinician collects eggs using a thin needle guided by ultrasound. Most patients receive medicine for comfort or sedation.

What you should know

The procedure often takes a short time, but recovery and clinic observation take longer. Cramping or light spotting may occur. You will need specific instructions on food, medicines, driving, and when to call. The egg count may differ from the follicle count.

What to ask your care team

“How will pain be managed, and what symptoms should make me call?”

One important reminder

Heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, fainting, or trouble breathing need urgent evaluation.

Before your next visit

Write down your questions. Bring your medicine list and any test results you have. Ask for a plan in writing. If an answer is not clear, ask your team to explain it in a different way.
