What does my embryo grade mean?

An embryo grade describes how an embryo looks in the lab. It is not a promise that it will or will not become a baby.

What you should know

Labs may grade the expansion of a blastocyst and the appearance of different cell groups. Grading can help choose among embryos. Grades may differ across labs and cannot detect every chromosome problem or predict outcomes with certainty.

What to ask your care team

“How does this grade affect our transfer plan, and what are its limits?”

One important reminder

Avoid comparing grades across different labs as though they were identical.

Before your next visit

Write down your questions. Bring your medicine list and any test results you have. Ask for a plan in writing. If an answer is not clear, ask your team to explain it in a different way.
