How many embryos should I transfer?

For many patients, transferring one embryo is the safer plan because a twin pregnancy carries more risk.

What you should know

The choice depends on age, embryo quality, prior outcomes, and other factors. Placing more embryos may raise the chance of a multiple pregnancy. Twins have greater risks of early birth and health problems. Ask about the chance of live birth and twins with each option.

What to ask your care team

“What are my chances of one baby, twins, and live birth with one versus two embryos?”

One important reminder

Do not assume more embryos always means a better or safer result.

Before your next visit

Write down your questions. Bring your medicine list and any test results you have. Ask for a plan in writing. If an answer is not clear, ask your team to explain it in a different way.
