IUI or IVF: How do I choose?

IUI places prepared sperm into the uterus near ovulation. IVF collects eggs, fertilizes them in a lab, and may transfer an embryo to the uterus.

What you should know

IUI is often less involved and less costly per attempt. IVF needs more visits and procedures but may be more suitable for some diagnoses. Age, sperm results, tube health, cost, and how long you want to try affect the choice.

What to ask your care team

“What are the chance, cost, and time for each option in my situation?”

One important reminder

Neither treatment works for everyone.

Before your next visit

Write down your questions. Bring your medicine list and any test results you have. Ask for a plan in writing. If an answer is not clear, ask your team to explain it in a different way.
