WHAT THE EVIDENCE ACTUALLY SUPPORTS
Two honest facts frame every beta interpretation. First, absolute values overlap enormously between pregnancies that go on to live birth and those that do not — no single beta is a verdict. Second, the 48-hour change is the stronger signal: in a study of low first betas after frozen blastocyst transfer, a 48-hour increase of at least 1.9-fold predicted live birth with 88.5% sensitivity, and outperformed the starting number itself (Wu 2020).
For orientation only: at 14 days after frozen blastocyst transfer, a beta above roughly 109 mIU/mL predicted live birth with high sensitivity (93%) but low specificity — meaning most ongoing pregnancies exceed it, while many pregnancies above it still do not continue (Wu 2020). At 9 days after single blastocyst transfer, betas eventually ending in live birth averaged well above those ending in biochemical loss, but with wide, overlapping ranges (Ozer 2023). Your embryo's day of transfer converts to embryonic age: a day-5 blastocyst transferred today is implanting roughly 1-2 days later — which is why a “days past transfer” beta is not comparable between day-3 and day-5 transfers without adjustment.
THE HONEST DON'T-PANIC / DON'T-CELEBRATE LIST
• A lower-than-average first beta with a strong 48-hour rise is more reassuring than a high first beta with a weak rise.
• Frozen transfers tend to produce somewhat higher first betas than fresh transfers at the same day (Ozer 2023) — comparing your number to a friend's from a different protocol misleads.
• Vanishing-twin situations, late implantation, and lab-to-lab assay differences all move single values without changing the outcome.
• If your clinic drew the beta earlier than day 9 post-transfer, expect small numbers; the trend is everything.
