What happens to your birth plan

A cesarean does not have to cancel every preference you had.

Many preferences survive a cesarean if you ask in advance: a support person present, a clear drape so you can watch the birth, the baby placed skin to skin in the operating room, delayed cord clamping, music, quiet at the moment of birth, one arm left free, breastfeeding started in recovery, and photographs.

These are not fringe requests. In a randomized trial of 659 women, skin-to-skin contact in the operating room raised early breastfeeding within 60 minutes from 22% in the control group to 56% to 72% depending on duration, and raised exclusive breastfeeding at discharge from 57% to 62% to 71%.

Write it down and hand it overGive a short written list to your doctor at a prenatal visit and to the nurse when you arrive. Preferences that were discussed weeks earlier are far more likely to be honored than preferences raised for the first time on the operating table.
