The room, and who is in it
Expect eight to twelve people, and expect to be cold.
An operating room for a cesarean typically holds an obstetrician and an assistant, a scrub technician, a circulating nurse, an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist, a nurse for the baby, often a pediatric team, and sometimes trainees and students.
The room is bright and kept cold, which is one reason shivering is so common. You will lie on a narrow table, tilted slightly to the left, with your arms out to the sides. You can ask to have one arm left free so you can touch your baby.
Ask in advance about your support person. Policies differ, especially for general anesthesia, where a partner is frequently excluded entirely.
