Sex after a cesarean
Mode of delivery matters less than most people assume.
A meta-analysis of 17 studies and 3,410 women using a standard sexual function questionnaire found no significant effect of delivery mode on postpartum sexual function. Time since delivery mattered. Mode of delivery did not.
In the randomized Term Breech Trial follow-up at two years, there was no significant difference in sexual problems between women assigned to planned cesarean and planned vaginal birth.
Standard advice is to wait until bleeding has stopped and you feel ready, commonly around six weeks. Pain with intercourse that persists deserves evaluation rather than patience.
