Preterm labor: knowing the signs is the whole intervention
Because the treatments only work if you arrive in time.
Preterm birth affected 10.41% of US births in 2024, a rate that has barely moved in fifteen years.
The treatments that improve outcomes, steroids to mature the baby's lungs and magnesium to protect the brain, take hours to work. They only help if you are assessed before delivery is imminent. That makes recognising the signs the single most useful thing you can do.
Before 37 weeks, be assessed for
- Regular tightening or cramping, even if not very painful
- Persistent low backache that comes and goes in a rhythm
- Pelvic pressure, as though the baby is pushing down
- A gush or persistent trickle of fluid
- Any vaginal bleeding
- A change in vaginal discharge
