Induction is the biggest change in American birth
A quarter of labors were induced in 2016. A third are now. Induction rose in every gestational age band, and the largest relative rise was at 37 and 38 weeks.
Nothing else in obstetrics has moved this fast this recently.
NCHS puts it plainly: The percentage of singleton births in which labor was induced increased 39% in the United States from 2016 to 2024, from about one-quarter (24.9%) to more than one-third of all births (34.5%).
The pace has slowed, from an average 6% rise a year between 2017 and 2020 to 2% a year between 2020 and 2024.
Counted across all live births rather than singletons only, the same measure went from 24.5% in 2016 (967,811 births) to 33.9% in 2024 (1,229,728). Two correct numbers for the same year, on two different denominators. Both are published by the same agency.

highest for the youngest mothers (under age 20) and lowest for mothers ages 30-39 in both 2016 and 2024.That is the opposite of the story most people assume.
