How long pushing is allowed to take
Longer than most people are told.
Current US guidance allows at least 3 hours of pushing for a first baby and at least 2 hours for a later baby before diagnosing arrest, with additional time permitted if you have an epidural. Individual units and individual clinicians often apply shorter limits than the guideline does.
If you are told time is up"What does the guideline actually allow here, and is the baby showing any sign of a problem?" Time alone, with a reassuring baby and progress being made, is not a reason.
