Getting up and walking
Earlier than you expect, and for a specific reason.
You will usually be helped out of bed within 12 to 24 hours, sometimes sooner. This is uncomfortable and it is deliberate. Walking reduces blood clots, helps the bowels restart, and speeds recovery.
The first time is the worst. Take pain medication 30 to 45 minutes beforehand, hold a pillow against your incision, and ask for help. Do not do it alone the first time.
