Depression and anxiety after a cesarean

Common, treatable, and separate from how the birth went.

Postpartum depression is common after any birth. Reported rates after cesarean vary widely across studies, reflecting different questionnaires and thresholds rather than a single true figure. Risk factors identified in a meta-analysis of women after cesarean included younger age, higher antenatal depression and anxiety scores, being a first-time mother, and lower education.

Screening is standard. Take it seriously and answer honestly. A questionnaire you game to look fine is a wasted opportunity.

What helpsTreatment works. Talk therapy, medication compatible with breastfeeding, sleep protection and practical support all help. Tell your doctor, your partner, or anyone who will act on it.
